    DARK UNDERARMS

This can happen for several reasons, including your genetics, irritation from products you're using, or an underlying condition – which should be ruled out by a doctor first!

Want to do something about it?

If you're unhappy with the cosmetic appearance of your underarms and have ruled out any possible conditions with your doctor, look to formulas featuring Niacinamide, Retinol, Kojic Acid and Hydroquinone which may help to lessen the appearance of pigmentation.

    Dry Skin Patches

Do you notice patches of skin that look and feel rough and itchy? Dry skin is often temporary or seasonal and has many causes including skin conditions (which you should rule out with your doctor first!), changing weather and environment, sun damage, harsh skincare products.

Want to do something about it?

If you're unhappy with the appearance of your dry skin, make sure you're using moisturizing formulas and using SPF to protect your skin from further damage.

    Body Acne (AKA: BACNE)

While acne is more common for teenagers, it can happen to people of any age and can also appear anywhere that you have oil glands on your skin (think: face, back, chest etc). This can happen for many reasons including excess sweating and friction from clothing, to stress, your diet and hormonal changes.

Want to do something about it?

If you're unhappy with the cosmetic appearance of your acne, there's many treatments available to help minimize the appearance and help avoid scarring. Look to non-comedogenic formulas that won't clog pores and ingredients such as salicylic acid.

    Ingrown Hairs

You may notice ingrown hairs after hair removal where the hair starts to grow back but doesn't break through the skin. It can result in small, swollen bumps that may feel sore.

    Want to prevent them?

    • Before hair removal, wash your skin with warm water and a mild cleanser.
    • Apply a lubricating shaving cream/gel, and use a fresh, sharp razor.
    • Shave in the direction of hair growth.
    • Rinse the blade after each stroke, then your skin with cool water once you're finished.
    • Use an exfoliator that features AHAs to help remove dead skin cells and prevent ingrown hairs.

    Understanding the Skin Barrier

The skin barrier, also known as the moisture or lipid barrier, constitutes the outer layer of our skin. Picture it like a brick wall, where cells are bricks, and lipids like ceramides and fatty acids are the mortar. This barrier is pivotal, safeguarding vital water reserves within the body, while fending off harmful microorganisms. It plays a key role in supporting skin immunity and managing inflammation.

    A healthy skin barrier

    • Smooth,
    • Even-toned,
    • Well-hydrated,
    • Clear.

    A compromised barrier

    • Irritation,
    • Redness,
    • Inflammation, and
    • Susceptibility to issues like breakouts, dryness, and a burning sensation.

    Factors Damaging the Skin Barrier

    • Environmental stressors,
    • Emotional and physical stress,
    • Nutrition,
    • Genetic predispositions,
    • Sensitizing ingredients,
    • Excessive exfoliation,
    • Cosmetic procedures,
    • Aging.

To restore a damaged skin barrier:

    • Pause the use of exfoliating and active ingredients.
    • Prioritize hydrating, nourishing, and healing skincare products.
    • Consistently apply SPF for protection against environmental stressors.
